Is there a story behind your name?
As a theatre kid who already earned the nickname Gypsea, finding a derby name came easily. Gypsy Rose Lee was a badass woman who became a leader in the vaudeville and burlesque communities by incorporating her sharp wit and elegance into her acts. In addition to stage performing she was a film actress, author, and playwright. She used her platform to make change in the world as an activist for labor unions. You may know some of her story from the musical “Gypsy” as it was created based on her memoir. I’ve also incorporated my grandmother- another kickass woman into my derby persona through using her middle name (Lea) and her birthdate 10/17 as my number. One of my personal derby goals its to be a multifaceted league member who rocks just as much as my namesakes.
Did you have any previous athletic or skating experience before starting roller derby?
I started freshman recruitment with no previous skating experience but have been an athlete my entire life. I have 20+ years of dance training and ran cross country all through school including competing at the collegiate level.
Tell us about your gear!
My skates were made just for me and they’re vegan! I glued a tiara to my helmet for my recruitment graduation scrimmage because it was prom themed and now I can’t go without it because it helps keep the helmet covers secure.
We all end up in the penalty box at some point. Which penalty is your favorite and why?
When a multiplayer is called on one of the opposing blockers because it’s easy to use the pause and confusion to get through as the jammer 😉
What’s your favorite Orlando theme park ride?
Expedition Everest- Legend of the Forbidden Mountain- I’ve gotten to ride it in the middle of multiple marathons 😀
What’s your favorite Orlando activity that isn’t a theme park?
Hiking and taking pictures at Orlando Wetlands and Black Bear Wilderness Area
